As a Syrian, I must celebrate Sunday, Dec. 8th, of 2024, when the Syrian revolution won and the people ousted the former regime. 13 years of bloodshed and fighting finally ended on that day... And a new flag is raised! But the story of the flag of independence actually starts much earlier...
This flag was first drafted in the constitution in 1930, under the French colonial rule, which oppressed the new flag. The green tricolor became a symbol of independence and autonomy for Syrians. And, later on, it was carried by Sultan (basha) al-Atrash, in the great Syrian revolution and subsequent independence in 1946, beginning the first ever Syrian Republic. Which lasted 12 years, after which more flag changes and country and state changes and coups happened (you can read more but to keep it short) ending with the Assad regime and their Ba'ath party taking power...
When the revolution was again roaring against the Assad regime, and because of the lack of action and change. The revolution and the rebels symbolized the independence flag as the flag of the revolution and the flag of freedom from the oppression. This flag is now proudly raised by millions and millions of Syrians and their representation in various countries.
Thank you for taking the time to read this!
Best wishes,
