In Portugal, Carnival is a special day, most years a national holiday. There are small towns in the North with traditions that come from pagan communities. Some people dress as "caretos" and scare the community, specially young ladies, in "chocalhadas". This tradition was classified by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
