[Kazakhstan] Kazakh Kures
Agnes Dep
Kazakh Kures is a national wrestling style of the Kazakhs, which arose as a result of the synthesis of all traditional wrestling styles of the Eurasian continent. Kazakh Kures has been included in the program of republican competitions since 1938.
In 2016, UNESCO included Kazakh kures in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, noting its influence on strengthening relations between communities based on the principles of tolerance, goodwill and cooperation.
Various holidays and celebrations were not complete without competitions in this sport. The winning wrestlers became respected people. The name of the great Kazakh hero Kazymukan entered not only the history of the Kazakh people, but also the world elite of athletes.
In 2004, at the World Congress of Kazakhs in Berlin, a conference was held at which the International Federation of Kazakh Kures was created. In total, from 2004 to 2023, 10 World Championships, 12 Asian Championships, 6 World Cups and 6 European Championships were organized in Kazakh wrestling in Kazakhstan, Iran, Brazil, South Africa and other countries.
